Russia looks to boost European market share

Russian energy giant Gazprom is looking to increase its 35% market share in Europe, as demand for natural gas increases and competitors expect lower production.

Elena Burmistrova, Director General of Gazprom Export, said further opportunities come following a decline in North Sea production and the planned shutdown of the Groningen, a significant gas field in the Netherlands.

Gazprom estimate is European market share in 2018 to have reached as high as 35%, according to Burmistrova, who said the decline in North Sea production meant “the space for Russian gas is being freed up”.

Several European countries have expressed concern about Russia using state-owned Gazprom as a political tool to gain greater control over the region.
