Oil up on hopes of trade talks

The FTSE 100 had a strong start to the day, up 0.883pc at 6,871.01, as traders expected US stocks to open in the blue, adding support to the UK’s top shares that had begun to fade.

Oil prices rose, with international benchmark Brent crude rising 1.66pc to $58.28, on hopes that talks between US and Chinese officials could defuse a trade dispute between the world’s two leading economies.

Sterling remained steady, trading as high as $1.2797 during the morning session, before cutting down to $1.2780 as parliament prepared for a debate on the UK’s Brexit deal ahead of next week’s vote.
