Concerns over China weigh on markets

The FTSE 100 dropped 0.626pc to 6,692.06 as concerns mounted over the state of the Chinese economy, which triggered a fall in mining stocks with shares in Evraz plummeting 4.84pc.

Brent crude was up 0.47pc at $55.17, although oil price gains were limited by volatility on the currency markets and concerns that a slowdown in the global economy would curb demand.

Sterling fell to as low as $1.2409 against the dollar as fears over the health of the global economy led to an investor exodus away from currencies.
