The FTSE 100 was steady at 7,054.25, despite losses across the mining sector – led by Antofagasta, down 1.38pc.

Brent crude dropped below the $80 mark, down 1.29pc at $79.02 after the fourth week of weekly increase in US crude inventories, suggesting ample supply.

Sterling recovered losses to trade flat at $1.3114 after UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced she was open to extending the Brexit transition period to help secure a deal with the European Union.
