Russian pipeline to China 93% complete

Gazprom’s Power of Siberia natural gas pipeline that will run from Russia to China is nearly complete, the gas giant stated in its latest update of major projects.

A total of 1,249 miles of pipes have been laid so far, the equivalent of 93% of the length of the route, which is expected to begin transporting gas at the end of 2019.

A 30-year contract will see Gazprom supply 1.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to CNPC via the pipeline, with the Russian energy giant investing $3.2 billion this year – up from $2.3 billion last year.

Although China is looking to increase its domestic gas supply, it will not be enough to meet the country’s rapidly growing demand, which will see the economic giant become the world’s largest importer of natural gas by 2019, according to data from the International Energy Agency.
