Brent crude to end week down

The FTSE 100 dropped back to -0.085pc at 7,549.92 having hit 7,577 earlier in the morning session with mining giant Antofagasta amongst the worst performers on the index, down 1.40pc.

Brent crude gained 1.12pc at $72.23 but remained on course for a weekly loss after increasing concern over trade disputes and a slowdown in economic growth.

Turkey’s lira was battered down a further 6pc against the dollar after a warning of more US sanctions unless the country hands over American evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson.

Sterling managed to hold itself above the $1.27 mark against a broadly weak dollar, which gave traders the opportunity to buy the currency as new data pointed towards a relatively stable UK economy.
