FTSE 100 close to all-time high

The FTSE 100 was up 0.205pc at 7,738.79 – a mere 32 points from an all-time high thanks to a surge in natural resources stocks.

Anglo American, Antofagasta and Rio Tinto helped boost the FTSE 100, up 4.16pc, 2.04pc and 2.62pc respectively.

Brent crude slipped 0.68pc at $77.90 despite ongoing output cuts from OPEC – a sign that demand is easing as prices approach $80.

Sterling dropped back towards its yearly low against the dollar following fresh concerns over Brexit negotiations and the relatively modesty in growth in UK wages
