Total enter Israeli-Lebanese dispute territory

The French energy giant Total has signed an agreement to drill in Block 9 – a site that is located off the coast of Lebanon and borders Israeli waters.

The location was one of two blocks signed in Lebanon as part of its first offshore oil and gas exploration and production licensing round.

Tensions have risen between the two nations over disputed the disputed marine boundary, which has led to exchanged threats over the treaty.

Total has said it is “fully aware” of the disputes surrounding Block 9, with the company’s main prospects located over 15 miles away and thus “the exploration well on Block 9 will have no interference at all with any fields or prospects located south of the border area”.
