US becomes net exporter of natural gas

The US has become a net exporter of natural gas.

In three out of the first five months in 2017 the US was a net exporter of natural gas according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Since 1958 the US has been a net importer of natural gas.

President Trump has talked about establishing US “energy dominance” as a policy.

Through this the administration is using the US’s natural resources both for economic gain and also for wider foreign policy strategy.

Recently a US company, Xcoal, signed a contract with Ukraine to supply 700,000 tons of coal. The move is intended to move Ukraine away from energy reliance on Russia.

The US also wishes to use its position in both the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the World Bank to promote the use of modern efficient fossil fuels. Through this developing countries will have access to reliable power to develop while reducing their emissions.
