BP hits shale in New Mexico

BP believes it has found a new shale gas field in New Mexico.

The discovery is in the Mancos Shale, a part of the San Juan Basin.

The head of Shale Gas at BP Dave Lawler said: “This result supports our strategic view that significant resource potential exists in the San Juan Basin, and gives us confidence to pursue additional development of the Mancos Shale”.

This comes as BP also announced that another of its natural gas wells in the region had reached 14 year regional production highs, pumping 12.9 million cubic feet of gas a day.

The land was bought by BP from Devon Energy in 2015. BP is planning to open a new headquarters for its US shale unit in Denver in 2018.
